Who are you? Tell us a bit more about yourself!

I am Aseem. I was born and raised in India. Moved to Singapore at age of 16 and have been here ever since. I thrive on challenges and like making products that create value in the world. I’m passionate about a lot of things from soccer to physics to entrepreneurship to programming and always trying to learn more. I believe life is a lot about learning and improving oneself one step at a time to create positive change within as well as outside in the world.

What’s your story? Tell us about a life-changing incident.

I was living my life by the books till the age of 21 and was quite successful in the conventional sense. That’s when one of my friends asked me to share one of my failures. As I pondered over the question, I realized that I did not have any such failure. To me that was not a good sign. You are bound to fail when you challenge your limits. That was a defining moment for me. I decided to not go for safe bets but instead go where I wanted to go even if it meant fighting against the odds.

Why 50for50 and why now?

I dream of a world in which every human being has access to equal opportunities, basic ammenities, human rights and dignity. So I do my best to join movements that help us create a better world. 50for50 is a grassroots movement that has the potential to bring inspiration to the national consciousness of Singapore and kickstart a movement that is based on compassion, generosity and community spirit. I am grateful to be part of this amazing group of people who are coming together to give back. This is an opportunity of a lifetime!

What gets you up in the morning?

My name “Aseem” means infinite but my life on this planet is finite. I like to treat the finite time resource I have with utmost care and use it to bring good things to life in the world. Everyday is an opportunity to make world a little better through my work and relationships. That makes me jump out of bed.

Why this cause out of so many causes?

Sanctuary House is a charity that I have volunteered with in the past and I believe they are a great organization. I deeply believe that all childred should have a loving and caring environment growing up. Sanctuary House provides foster care to children deprived of family care for various social reasons.

I’d like to do my best to help Sanctuary House in its vision that all children will grow up in nurturing families and supportive communities.

Any experiences with charity or non-profit work before?

I co-founded in 2009 while I was studying at National University of Singapore. Ever since then I have been involved with numerous charity-related events. Through these experiences, I have learned that you really live more when you give more.

What kind of change are you looking to bring about as a changemaker?

50for50 will inspire people in Singapore and all over the world to understand that they hold the power to bring about social change. I like the quote by Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you want to see in the world”. And I believe that 50for50 movement will help spread the message of being the change to a wide audience. That in my opinion is amazing!

What is your big idea on how to raise funds for 50for50?

I will be challenging all my friends who stay in Singapore to donate SGD 50 or more for their next birthday. I am convinced that withing my friends and their friends of friends, we will be able to find 365 people with unique dates of birth such that we can raise at least SGD 50 x 365 = SGD 18,250 for The Sanctuary House.
