Who are you? Tell us a bit more about yourself!

I am XJ, founder and head designer of my own lifestyle label, Pleatation. I have been in the textiles and apparel manufacturing industry for several years, heading a pleating factory in Singapore.

I am a strong believer in doing something you are passionate about and following your dreams!

What’s your story? Tell us about a life-changing incident.

Being born and raised entirely in Singapore, life was pretty comfortable for me. I am surrounded by very hardworking and active people who were always on the go, taking life by the storm in their own ways. There hasn’t been a particular one incident, however, as I grew older, I noticed how these people due to their hectic lifestyles, start to fall sick much easily. They don’t get to fully enjoy the fruits they have sown after working so hard due to all the sicknesses they get over time. At this stage of being an entrepreneur, I feel extremely strong about this, and am hoping that I can do a little something on my part to prevent that from happening to more people.

Why 50for50 and why now?

I chanced upon this movement via a friend, and figured – I have always wanted to do my part in giving back to the society, but due to work or time commitment issues, I never got started. So this time, I felt that there was never going to be a right time, I would rather put in the extra effort now, together with the 49 other compassionate individuals and do something for Singapore.

What gets you up in the morning?

Work. Not the most ideal alarm clock, but I believe that by waking up early, I can get the most of out of a day in getting things done. Before I started working officially, I’ve always dreaded waking up anytime before 12pm. But right now, I am super thankful that I love what I do, because that really gets me kicking out of my bed!

Why this cause out of so many causes?

I feel that as we progress in this society, we start to take life more and more seriously, meaning working for 15 to 18 hours a day, either trying to make ends meet, or trying to earn more to live a better lifestyle. It’s a norm now to be working your asses off and for some with no regards to any form of healthy living and eating. As part of the GenY, this is how we function now, and I am concerned that with such a lifestyle, we will be worn down earlier in the future years with sicknesses and with no knowledge of prevention.

Cancer is one of the most common illnesses which people suffer from, sometimes unknowingly till the later stage. I feel that people need to be further educated in knowing how to live a balanced lifestyle – be it having a fair share of work and play, or even the minimum amount of healthy food intake. I hope to pass on this message, and play my part in supporting people who are already going through this very dreadful journey.

Any experiences with charity or non-profit work before?

Yes! When I was in secondary school, I was part of the Southeast CDC Racial Harmony Youth Ambassadors where we planned events and activities in the district to bond families and inter-racial relationships with one another.

What kind of change are you looking to bring about as a changemaker?

Definitely to raise more funds, the 365 CPS is a non-profit org and depends a lot on public donation. I want to be able to aid in raising more funds for them and at the same time, also educate people in the knowledge of healthy lifestyle and cancer prevention.

What is your big idea on how to raise funds for 50for50?

Brainstorming! Having lots of thoughts at the moment – watch out for it!
