Who are you? Tell us a bit more about yourself!

Elaine Kim is a practicing doctor in palliative care, and looks after the terminally ill in their homes with HCA Hospice Care. Outside medical work, she is an entrepreneur. Her businesses include Trinity Gallery in Singapore and Trinity Bridal in Hong Kong, bridal and evening gown boutiques that carry international designers like Oscar de la Renta, Marchesa, Monique Lhuillier, Reem Acra, Carolina Herrera and Jenny Packham.
She also co-founded Atelier Solitaire, a fine jewellery brand where she serves as a Director as well as designer, creating jewellery (including bespoke pieces) with a focus on precious stones like sapphires, rubies and diamonds. Her experiences have led her to become a co-founder of CRIB, a social enterprise that empowers women by helping them to become successful entrepreneurs. As a pilot project for CRIB, she is in the process of setting up a third business venture, an event design company called Milk and Honey.
Actively involved in philanthrophy causes, she has led awareness-building and fund–raising initiatives for charities such as the Bone Marrow Donor Programme, Dover Park Hospice, HCA Hospice Care and RiverKids, raising over a million dollars for causes that support patients with cancer, the terminally ill and protect at-risk children from trafficking and abuse. She is an ambassador for SNOW (Say “No” to the Oppression of Women”), a UN Women initiative that enables programmes which prevent violence against women. She is an advisor and changemaker for the 50for50 project, an initiative to activate 50 changemakers to raise $5million for charity.
Elaine enjoys travelling and writing, and thus freelances as a travel journalist.
She has regular luxury travel column in Tatler, and contributes stories to various magazine publications.
You can see some of her published articles on the Travel Stories in the Press page.
Most importantly, she is a wife and mother, married to venture capitalist John Kim, who blogs here. They have 2 little boys, Kyan and Luke.

Why 50for50 and why now?

Why not now?

What gets you up in the morning?

My kids.

Why this cause out of so many causes?

Working at a hospice, I have a first-hand view of palliative care, how important it is , and what a difference it makes to the terminally ill patients as well as their families.

Any experiences with charity or non-profit work before?

Yes. I have led fundraising and awareness building drives for a number of causes and charities, including HCA Hospice Care, Dover Park Hospice, Bone Marrow Donor Programme, River Kids, Operation Smile, Yellow Ribbon Fund UN Women and International Bridges to Justice. This year, apart from my involvement with 50for50, I am sitting on the fundraising committee for the Yellow Ribbon Fund’s Yellow Brick Road project, as well as serving as an ambassador for UN Women’s SNOW (Say No to the Oppression of Women) charity.

What kind of change are you looking to bring about as a changemaker?

At HCA Hospice Care, we also care for many of the poorest of the poor elderly, and I want to raise funds to provide for these subset of patients in particular, to provide them with some comfort , joy and dignity in their final days.

What is your big idea on how to raise funds for 50for50?

A Christmas Fundraising Event!
