Who are you? Tell us a bit more about yourself!

I am Gerald and I currently run a boutique corporate services firm TPS which is a family business. I enjoy all kinds of music from classical to heavy metal, a wide range of sports and like to meet people from various walks of life. I enjoy talking to and sharing with people about almost anything, and always believe that with every conversation, there is always something more to be learnt or shared, and it helps me in my personal growth.

What’s your story? Tell us about a life-changing incident.

I always believed that life happens to all of us, and each has their own choice on perspective and behaviour, and I have come to realise that the hardest thing in life is to actually enjoy the journey instead of looking to rewards upon reaching destinations. Meeting my fiancée was a life-changing event for me. She happens to be the trigger and the rest of the ammunition to get me through the rest of my life, hanging on to my faith and my beliefs, and making me a better person day by day (because you have to work it out anyway! No escape from your wife! Haha).

Why 50for50 and why now?

I was actually “sabo-ed” by one of the organizing committee member’s father into joining this cause, but I am a strong believer in the saying that “everything happens for a reason”. Had I not bumped into this member’s father at a random event that I was attending, I would never have been involved as a changemaker in 50for50. So I guess it is time to make something happen for the greater good.

What gets you up in the morning?

My very irritating alarm clock of which I snooze multiple times haha! Jokes aside, I always feel that everybody in the world has a purpose in life, and it is what gets me up in the morning. To continue to search for purposes that have yet to be uncovered and to carry out the purposes that you already know that you have in your own responsibility.

Why this cause out of so many causes?

My father has always been involved in a lot of charity work and fundraising in his lifetime, and naturally, I consulted him on this matter of which cause to choose. When he reverted with St Andrew’s Cathedral Home for the Aged, I was ok with it as I believe that there will only be two types of people that actually require charity, people who REALLY need the help – the elderly with no family, and the orphans. So this cause was well, close enough.

Any experiences with charity or non-profit work before?

My experience with charity or non-profit work has always been in the more financial side of things with my father, things such as fundraising. I have had exposure, minimal to say the least, to some charity and non-profit work with my alma mater (Anglo-Chinese School Independent) as they make it compulsory to visit certain homes, clean up beaches in Malaysia for the community, and planting fruit trees in the rural villages of China that help with the livelihood of the more underprivileged in society.

What kind of change are you looking to bring about as a changemaker?

As is in line with the main objective of this cause, it is to raise awareness amongst the youth in our generation about being more active and engaged in the community, and to actually realize the potential that they have within themselves. (35 and below, although we do have youthful people in our society that are way above 35!) Young people nowadays have to get off their apathetic bums and step up to actually DO something. The change I am looking to bring is to actually show them that they can DO something about the situation rather than to keep reacting to the situation. Only dead fish flow with the current.

What is your big idea on how to raise funds for 50for50?

My tiny idea on how to raise funds for 50for50 came when I was just having a drink with one of the member’s of the organizing committee of 50for50. It comes in mainly two parts:

1) Multiple Screenings of a Moive – Ping Pong
2) Carrying out an event – a Ping Pong Tournament (of course with recreational participation as well)

The multiple screenings of the movie Ping Pong will have to happen first, to raise awareness in the society that age is but a number. This ties in perfectly with the fact that we are supporting a cause that reaches out to elderly people in need and also evokes feeling in the youth:

“If that old foggy can play such active ping pong, what am I doing lazing around on a couch after a day job whereby I spent 8 hours sitting behind a desk?”
“What have I been doing with my life?”
“Why am I not chasing my passions and doing things that matter?”
“If this old lady can do it. Why can’t I?”

I think you get the drift. Make them make something happen.
