MOVEMENT FOR THE INTELLECTUALLY DISABLED OF SINGAPORE (MINDS)
- Movement for the Intellectually Disabled (MINDS) was founded in May 1962, under the name of Singapore Association for Retarded Children (SARC), by a group of philanthropists who saw the need to provide equal opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities to receive education and then, integrated as contributing and responsible citizens of Singapore. MINDS has since grown to be one of the largest Voluntary Welfare Organization (VWO) serving about 2,400 clients between 6 years old to old age. MINDS has established four special schools, three employment development centres, three day training and development centres and one multi-service residential home.
- MINDS Social Enterprise, an initiative started in 2000 by MINDS, is established to create employment opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities. With the introduction of in-house industries, it has led to sustainable employment for many people with intellectual disabilities, proving to be a viable alternative of employment opportunities. Some of these projects include MINDS Food, MINDS Shop, MINDS Wash, MINDS Craft and MINDS Perform where different opportunities are presented to MINDS clients of different skills to offer.
